When South Africans get together for afternoon coffee, you're sure to find a fresh Milk Tart to sweeten the occasion.

Milk tart is an authentic and uniquely South African patisserie. Did you know that our milk tarts originated from the Dutch Settlers who made their way to the Cape in the 1600's?

Sweet Crust

Ingredients:

  • 400g Mrs J Yellow Margarine
  • 200g Icing Sugar
  • 5ml Vanilla Essence
  • 50ml Eggs
  • 600g Cake Flour

Working method:

  1. Cream the Margarine and Icing together.
  2. Add vanilla essence.
  3. Add the eggs on slow speed.
  4. Add Cake Flour and mix through in slow speed.
  5. Mix till a soft firm paste is obtained.
  6. Roll the paste ± 3mm thick and line a baking tray of your choice.
  7. Bake sweet crust at 180°C for 15-20 minutes until golden in colour.

Milk tart is uniquely South African.

Filling

Ingredients (Step 1):

  • 1200ml Full Cream Milk
  • 100g Mrs J Yellow Margarine
  • 100g Chipkins Sugar

Ingredients (Step 2):

  • 200ml Full Cream Milk
  • 100ml Eggs
  • 100g Corn Flour
  • 5ml Vanilla Essence

Working method:

  1. Place all the ingredients in Step 1 into a cooking pot and bring  to a boil whilst stirring.
  2. Mix all ingredients in Step 2 together in a jug and add to Step 1 ingredients when they start to boil.
  3. Remove from the heat as soon as it starts to thicken.

Cinnamon

Ingredients:

  • 20g Cinnamon

Working method:

  1. Pour the filling into the baked shape.
  2. Dust with cinnamon to finish the Milk Tart off.
